What you need is what we provide 

Being a self-employed driving instructor, you’ll have a dual control car to provide driving instruction and you’ll want to know that your car is properly insured to allow you to carry out your daily driving instruction activities. It's for this reason that you’ll come to Waveney Group Schemes Ltd, who solely specialise in driving tuition insurance.  

It doesn’t matter if you own or lease the car; legally it is your responsibility to arrange appropriate insurance that covers both you and your car for driving instruction, driving tests and for your business as a driving instructor, so that in the event of a claim being made by you or against you or one of your pupils, your insurance policy will be sufficient to meet the claim.

Following an initial discussion with you, one of Waveney’s specialist driving tuition insurance advisors will determine precisely what insurance cover you need to carry out your daily driving instruction activities and (subject to your risk being acceptable) will provide a comprehensive insurance policy from one of our insurance companies or Lloyds syndicates to suit your demands and needs.

Why you need a specialist driving instructor insurance policy 

What you (as a professional driving instructor) should never do is buy a private car insurance if you use your car to provide driving instruction, as a private car insurance policy WILL NOT provide the cover you need to carry out your instruction activities. The ‘use’ provided by a private car insurance policy will not be sufficient for your needs, neither will you be able to have dual controls in your car. It’s likely that driving will be limited, or restricted to drivers 25+ (30+ in some instances), and you risk being convicted of having invalid insurance which usually results in a substantial fine and 6 points on your driving licence - something we’re sure you’ll be keen to avoid. 

Waveney Group Schemes Ltd offers specialist driving instructor insurance policies that provide first class cover, our standard insurance cover being shown below. In addition, Motorist Services Ltd (MSL) compliments the insurance programme by providing  first class claims management services. Optional insurance extensions to standard cover are available for more specialist risks: - 

Comprehensive insurance cover usually subject to a £150 excess No excess if a non-fault claim and MSL repairer is used No additional young or inexperienced driver excesses Windscreen cover - excess depends on specific insurer Any driver for social, domestic and pleasure (25+ / 30+) Off-road driving instruction insurance - young drivers (14+ / 15+) Dual control car provided following a claim (not glass) Public liability - £20million (includes show me tell me)Instructor liability - claims by pupils against YOU Full claims management programme (provided by MSL)Motor legal expenses - £100,000 (provided by MSL)

Replacement dual control cars are provided following an accident (whether your fault or otherwise), fire, theft, attempted theft and vandalism claims. The replacement dual control car will either be available when you take your car to an MSL (Motorist Services Ltd) approved repairer or will be delivered to you wherever possible on the same day or within 24 hours of an incident occurring where your car is un-driveable (Monday to Friday). In the event that your car is declared a ‘write-off’, the replacement dual control car will be provided for up to 30 days and will cease 5 days from the date you receive the settlement cheque.

Driving instructor liability (included within all Waveney driving instructor insurance policies) protects you in the event that one of your pupils sustains personal injury as a result of a road traffic accident whilst they are undergoing driving instruction and where you are in some way considered to be negligent. 

Optional extensions are available to include GUARANTEED BONUS (never lose your no claims bonus) or PROTECTED BONUS (? Claims in ? years - dependent on the insurance company) and these options will be discussed when we speak with you. 

Either in addition (or separate from the above) Waveney can include FLEET DRIVER TRAINING INSURANCE COVER (comprehensive cover whilst you carry out demonstration drives in customers cars). This insurance cover is provided by Amlin Insurance Ltd and Waveney believes that it is the only specialist driving school insurance broker providing such cover. 

Another popular specialist driving school insurance extension is B+E TRAILER TRAINING (cover to ‘teach to tow’ a trailer). This insurance extension may be added to an Amlin Insurance Ltd policy either in addition or separately to the above.

Waveney Group Schemes Ltd provides insurance cover for each of the above tests at £38 (including insurance premium tax). Insurance cover is available throughout the UK (including Northern Ireland). The policy can be purchased either prior to the day of your test or on the day of your test if necessary. In such instances, we’ll arrange to either fax or email an insurance cover note to you.
